From #ConnectedContinent to #ConnectTheWorld

I have always advocated for the importance of broadband internet (together with Neelie Kroes for connected continent– at numerous Bulgarian and European events). Yesterday I read about Facebook’s initiative Internet.org – a partnership of technological giants like Samsung, Ericsson and Nokia, which aims to connect the rest of the world (namely the 2/3 that don’t have access to the Internet) to the global web.
I not only support internet.org but also it made me think of some of the others similar innovative projects that were initiated by other tech companies. For example, Google’s project “Loon”. The main idea behind Google Loon is, or should I say the main ideas are – balloons. Yes, balloons. Project Loon balloons float in the stratosphere, twice as high as airplanes. You can learn more about this extraordinary way of connecting people on www.google.com/loon but the main idea is that the balloons are interconnected and also are networked with special Internet antenna on the ground. In this way people all over the world have access to Internet.
I believe it’s not about the benefits of networked society any more. Now we strive to find a way to provide EVERYONE with access to internet and we experiment with all kinds of revolutionary technologies. For sure this is a step in the right direction.
